AI/ML Engineer

At EnGarde Games Group, we’re an independent studio focused on building deeply immersive and technically innovative games for console and PC. We combine narrative-driven design with smart, efficient systems that scale across platforms. Now, we’re looking for an AI/ML Engineer to help bring our NPCs to life with rich, responsive behavior.


Job Purpose

As an AI/ML Engineer, you’ll design and develop lightweight but powerful NPC behavior systems for our multi-platform game. You’ll collaborate with designers, programmers, and artists to ensure that our in-game characters respond in natural, believable, and optimized ways — all while staying within the memory and performance limits of modern consoles.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop scalable AI systems for real-time NPC behavior using Unity or Unreal
  • Implement behavior trees, pathfinding, and memory/knowledge sharing structures
  • Collaborate with game designers to define NPC goals, reactions, and systems logic
  • Optimize AI for performance across consoles and PC
  • Debug and profile AI behavior in builds and dev tools
  • (Optional) Integrate LLM-based solutions via cloud services to enable dynamic NPC interactions
  • Maintain clean, modular, and well-documented code

Requirements

  • Proven experience building lightweight AI systems for games, especially NPCs
  • Strong understanding of behavior trees, pathfinding, and basic state/memory systems
  • Familiarity with Unity or Unreal Engine
  • Comfort working alongside designers and gameplay engineers
  • Solid understanding of optimization for console platforms
  • Bonus: Experience with integrating LLMs (e.g., GPT-based systems) via cloud backends

  • NPC systems run smoothly across platforms with minimal performance impact
  • Behaviors are modular, tunable, and designer-friendly
  • Responsive, believable AI enhances player immersion and gameplay
  • Features are delivered on schedule and integrated into live builds

  • Competitive gross salary: €35,000 – €55,000/year
